A Clean Sweep

Have you ever eaten crackers in bed, then experienced a miserable night's rest because of such. Well, me neither - but I've certainly spoken with people who have done just that. Fact is, when our beddy-bye isn't feeling clean, we are less apt to get a good night's rest.

In this day and age - it's difficult to accomplish that, as is. While we have the most modern equipment at our disposal, it seems that civilization has evolved into a group of restless souls.

That wasn't the case in American history. Farmers plowed the soil by hand without use of gloves. Their hands were so calloused that they resembled a belt sander.

Women made everything from the clothing on the family's back to candles, soap and other commodities that we now take for granted.

And just taking a bath was a chore as water had to be drawn from the creek, then heated on the stove. And even getting that stove up and running was a huge ordeal as trees had to be felled - and then chopped into useable logs.

As to the mattresses - in the beginning they were made of straw. The more fortunate individuals (the rich) had mattresses made of feathers. And to think that in today's world, we have beds that conform to our shape at the push of a button.

Amount of the Caloric Burn

For the individual who is small and weighs 110 pounds, they will burn about 27 kcals if it requires them fifteen minutes of making the bed.

Let's look at the individual who weighs two times as much - at 230 pounds. They are two times heavier in weight and will burn two times the amount of energy in comparison to the 110 pound individual.

Keep in mind that for many people, their jobs entail making beds all throughout the day - such as those with employment in room or hotel services. All that bending and moving around in preparing the bed contributes to strengthening the back, the knees and upper arm areas.

Activities which will use a similar amount of energy values are: dusting, folding the laundry, washing dishes, vacuuming, and playing a musical instrument such as the piano.
