Benefits of Basketball

It's amazing that over the ages we have created all of these different balls - so many different sizes and each with their own special set of rules.

As to the basketball, it's a bit like the tuba in a band - it's among one of the biggest of its kind. And it comes with its own set of healthy benefits, including:

It incorporates several different sets of muscles within the body that are worked while squatting, dribbling and loping across the court.

Any activity that works up a sweat and which gets the heart rate to an increased level is considered as an aerobic workout.

Whether it's just a relaxed game of shooting hoops with dad or solo, or playing amid a heated competition, the element of fun is at the forefront - and that's an important factor in benefiting from all activities and exercise. When we are participating in an enjoyable event - we don't even realize that we're strengthening our body in the process, nor do we mind all of the bending, sweating and other movements that are involved that are part of the game.

Both upper and body are worked in movements when playing on the court.

Hydrating Needs, Stored Versus Quick Energy Needs Amid Sports

If you've ever watched a game of basketball, and most of us have - the players that are most active on the court are generally drowning in a pool of sweat.

Movement, particularly aggressive or rapid movement produces body heat and unless a game is being played outdoors in very chilly or cold weather, dehydration is a concern.

But the keynote here is in regards to the body sweat. This is a sign that a vast amount of energy is being spent by the body in order to continue. Endurance requires more energy. And the longer that one is playing any given sport that creates enough heat to trigger profuse sweating, the more calories that are being burned.

If the player has eaten for the day, then the values will first be pulled from the immediate supply of energy. If this energy is spent amid activity, then it is pulled from that which is stored within the fat cells. If there is none in storage, or a minimal amount, the energy is supplied by pulling from other areas of the body.

How Many Calories are Burned Playing Basketball?

A 160 pound individual will spend about 100 calories during 15 minutes of playing basketball. If play continues for an hour, that amount will spike to close to 450 kcals.
