Great desserts include:

Strawberry Short Cake- Purchase the 100 calorie sponge cakes as the base.

Add 1/2 cup of sweet fresh strawberries to each sponge cake and top with 1 serving of REAL whipped cream from a spray can. It's eons healthier than the non-dairy offerings and contains the same calories per serving.

An additional tip - add fresh fruit or drained unsweetened canned fruit to the gelatin for a dose of nutritional goodness. Calories: about 150 per serving.

Biscotti - This delicious low calorie, low fat treat has left many a cupcake alone and crying in the stale darkness of the kitchen pantry.

Gelatin - It's giggly, it's wiggly, it's low in fat and calories in both sugar-free and regular forms, and one version or the other will fit nicely into all diet plans. If you're wanting to keep calories very low and prefer the sugar-free gelatin but your family enjoys the regular, make two batches and top with REAL whipped cream from a spray can.

Activity Matters: Couch potatoes generally meet the Grim Masher years before their time. Even small changes in the daily diet and in lifestyle can add years to one's life.

On that note, you can have a lasting impact on your family's state of health by encouraging activity in a subtle manner. Rather than announcing, "We're going to get in shape and that's that! Starting now, we're going to run a daily marathon. Sixty miles for each of us and that's that! No grumbling either!"

Well....first of all, that's an impossible goal to begin with. I doubt that even Moses could have run that far after seeing the burning bush, should he have been so inclined.

Instead, use this type of approach, "Hey, anyone want to visit the zoo today? The museum? How about shopping at the mall? We'll stop and get a tasty Subway sandwich on the way. Or, what about bowling, guys? Want to walk the dog with me? Are you guys in the mood for pecan hunting?Anyone want to plant a garden with me? A tree? Make a fish pond? Hey, let's have a family scavenger hunt - that would be fun! Anyone care to see if they can run faster than dad? Or mom? Let's have a sack race! Want to shoot some hoops? Toss some horseshoes? Go sledding? Climb a hill? Want to visit the state or national park and take a fun hike? Let's ride our bikes. What about an adventurous canoe ride or boat ride? We'll all take turns with the oars. Let's go roller skating! Let's build a snowman! Let's go swimming! Let's go to the playground and swing!"

These type of activities work well in getting out and getting active because we're generally having so much fun that we don't realize we're exercising our body.

IN SUMMARY: When the dieter must deal with meeting their family's food-favorite needs, it makes weight loss an even bigger challenge. Strive to meet the family's food-favorite needs, making sure to put their nutritional needs as well as your nutritional needs first and foremost.

Seek healthier cooking methods such as roasting and grilling; leave the batter in the Pantry Dugout rather than taking it to the Plate; replace shortening and other oils with healthier Canola Oil, Peanut Oil and Olive Oil and use sparingly; switch from deep-fried to baked chips; opt for dark chocolate over milk chocolate and white chocolate; switch from giant and regular size candy bars to mini candy bars; replace sugary sodas with low fat milk and pure water, and encourage more physical activity within your family.

You'll not only gain a stronger level of health, you'll bond even closer - creating memories that will last a lifetime.
