The
Diet Gravy Train
Are
you a gravy lover who has currently obliterated
gravy from your diet in an effort to lose
weight? If so, it's a great idea because
gravy is high in calories (and sometimes
in fat) per volume. Some gravy recipes
contain 50 or more calories per Tablespoon.
What a diet rip off.
But
don't jump totally off of the Diet Gravy
Train! We've got some gravy-making
suggestions that are diet friendly so you
can keep on hopping on board the Diet Gravy
Train....
Diet
Tips for Making Gravy Diet Friendly:
- Many
gravies are prepared with the meat
drippings. Greasy gravy is
very pricey in calories. Rather
than using meat drippings, try preparing
gravy from a broth base. If you
must use meat drippings, drain off
as much oil as possible from the
pan.
- When
preparing cream gravies, opt for
skimmed milk rather than cream or
whole milk.
- Go
light on the salt.
- Keep
in mind that it's very easy to go
overboard when it comes to gravy.
To keep serving sizes in hand, measure
out 1/4 cup of gravy, which is usually
the standard serving size. That's
about 2 Tablespoons. Not a
lot, but when you're trying to lose
weight, some times, little is more!
- Prepared
gravies may be a better choice because
calorie and fat content has been
calculated and listed on the label.
