Over Weight Mother - Over Weight Father

Diet Bites feels that genes are the superior controlling factor when it comes to the body's ability to mandate weight. When an individual's mother is over weight, the risk for obesity trickling over to the child becomes heightened. When both the mother is over weight and the father is over weight, over weight risks increase sharply.

Does an over weight mother and/or an over weight father mean that the offspring are destined to inherit weight issues? To determine such, let's look at the examples below:

Example 1: While Tina has always been plagued with weight issues, her husband Dan is as thin as a rail. They have two grown offspring together. Daughter Rita is thin like her father while son Chad has always experienced over weight issues. Obviously, Chad inherited his mother's genes in the area of weighty issues while Rita took after her father.

Example 2: Both Tim and Tonya have always struggled with their weight. On the other hand, their son Ed has always been willowy thin - like his grandfather on Tim's side of the family. Obviously, Ed inherited his grandfather's genes in the area of weighty issues. Lucky Ed.

In short, even when the mother and father are over weight AND even when both are NOT over weight, heredity can slip in those unfavorable genes that encourage weight gain.

So does this mean that an individual who has either an over weight mother or an over weight father - or both OR a history of family obesity can't achieve a healthy weight? No - of course not. However, it may prove more difficult for an individual who has inherited over weight genes to maintain a healthy weight.
