If you start now, you can be 10 pounds or more thinner by the first day of summer.

Every great grillmaster knows this corny trick.

When grilling corn, leave on the husks to lock in the heat.  You may wish to pull back the husk and remove the corn silk before placing on the grill.  If you choose to do this, be sure to pull the husks tightly in place so that they are locked securely around the corn.

Serve corn with a mix of the following: No calorie butter spray mixed with a bit of garlic salt, cracked pepper & crushed rosemary.

 Chick of the Woods Salad

Toss together 2 cups of assorted field greens, 1/2 cup of cubed - roasted chicken, 1/2 cup of sliced mushrooms, 1/2 sliced apple that has been sprayed with a bti of lemon juice, a few olives, 1 teaspoon of bacon bits, sliced cucumber, shredded carrots and a few cherry tomatoes.

Add raspberry-walnut (or any fruity) salad dressing OR serve salad dressing on the side.

Keep in mind that salad dressing can be very pricey in calories, so that's why it's important to measure out a serving size.  Although size isn't always everything, it is in this event.

Add a few croutons to the salad if desired, as well as a teaspoon of crushed nuts and a teaspoon of golden or dark raisins.

Serve with a diet soda.

Diet Newsletter, End of May

June is upon us and that means it's time to drag out that big grill and dust off the dust.  Grilling is downright fun and entertaining, dating back to the birth of fire.  It's the caveman and cavewoman in us that can't resist being hypnotized by the sizzle of fire, the scent of wood (or charcoal) whisking across our o-factors, combined with the aroma of just-grilled foods.  And grilling is a great cooking mode for anyone watching their weight.

We've got a few right-off-the-grill recipes threaded throughout this page, as well as some tasty links relating to grilling at Diet Bites that are guaranteed to set your grill ablaze with goodness.  So grab that bag of marshmallows, that package of lean meat, those tender ears of corn and get ready to grill up some goodness.

In the News

Over the counter vitamins are under the microscope and will soon be reviewed for safety. The National Institute of Health commissioned a panel of health experts to review over the counter vitamins which currently are unregulated.

The panel concluded that insufficient information existed in regards to recommending 'taking' or 'not taking' other the counter vitamins.  In addition, the panel strongly recommended that over the counter vitamins be reviewed for safety and effectiveness.

Our recommendation: Supplement your daily diet with other the counter vitamins ONLY if your doctor recommends such - at least until the research is completed.  The panel reviewing OTC vitamins concluded that some brands of vitamins contain more the recommended daily allowance.  Excess consumption of some vitamins can lead to the following:

Excess niacin may lead to liver damage;

Excess Vitamin A can lead to birth defects;

Excess Vitamin E can lead to bleeding problems;

Excess beta carotene consumption in smokers may lead to lung cancer.

Best Buys at Your Local Food Market

Here are a few of the best fresh buys at the market - as well as in Mother Nature's back yard this week that are tweaking up for warmer weather just over our horizon.  Keep in mind that if you go shopping in Mother Nature's back yard, take only what you need as local wildlife are dependent upon fruits & plants for survival.

  • Corn on the Cob
  • Fresh Strawberries are still a great buy in many areas.
  • Field Greens are our Green Thumb pick for the week.
