Choosing the Perfect Doctor

Sawbones or Healer?

Are you satisfied with the performance of your current doctor? They are getting few and far between these days with more and more people coming into the world.

And just like all other professions, there are good and bad in the mix.

The bad generally enter the health field for notoriety in addition to making big bucks while the good tend to be noble individuals who care about their fellow man and who get their boost from healing the sick rather than from the money factor.

How to Choose a Good Doctor

If you visit and have to wait an exceptionally long time in the waiting room that either means that the office has an inadequate manager and has overbooked the patient list, or that there is an epidemic being experienced locally, or the doctor is exceptional and is taking his or her time with their patients.

You can generally tell which applies by looking at the other patients who are in the waiting room with you. How ill do they look? If several are hacking and have faces red enough to serve as doubles in a car race, then most likely there is a lot of illness circling the village - such as flu.

If everyone appears normal and your visit with the doctor is very short - then it's most likely that they are overbooked AND the doctor isn't that efficient in caring for patients.

On the other hand, if the doctor is with you for enough time to do a thorough examination, to make a prognosis and to speak with you about any concerns that you might have - then likely they are an excellent doctor who is popular with patients because of their expertise.

In addition, after your visit should issues arrive that require further treatment - such as a reaction to a medication that was prescribed, you should be able to reach the answering service in a quick manner. The doctor - or one of the partners at the clinic should get back with you within the hour. If not - that's a red flag.

If you have an emergency, your doctor - or a partner should arrive at the hospital shortly after your arrival.

In Summary

If you find that you are waiting excessively and seeing your doctor for only a short minute or two amid your visit - that's not enough time to properly diagnose a condition and especially not enough time to render treatment. It may be time to look around and find a true professional.

Ask friends and family about the care they receive as that's always a great starting point.

As a note, I've had doctors who didn't remember the condition that I was being treated for; they even confused me with other patients - and tried to prescribe medications that I am highly allergic to. If I had not been my own doctor for that moment - then I would have landed in the hospital ER or perhaps six feet under. On the other hand, I've had some wonderful healers who took time to find out what was the real issue - and who treated it professionally.

It's important to keep in mind that you don't need to become best buddies with your doctor; they are there in a professional capacity. Because some have seen more than their share of tragedy - they may appear deadpan, but that doesn't mean that they aren't concentrated on determining your personal health needs and finding a cure or solution.

Use your head wisely and choose well - and if the current situation is frustrating, then find a new broom. They always sweep clean....
