Scarsdale Plan, a Fad Diet for Weight Loss

There are a couple of guidelines that accompany this plan:

1. 4 glasses minimum of water or diet beverage each day. There is no mention as to the size of the glass.

The official guidelines for liquid intake: 8 cups of water daily. This also counts the amount of liquids found within the foods in your eating plan.

2. Unlimited amounts of salt, ground pepper, vinegar, lemon, herbs, soy and Worcestershire sauces, ketchup and mustard.

There are many fad plans circling the globe that are very similar to the Scarsdale Diet, but they tend to be very minimal in energy values while risking one's health.

There are seven days worth of menus outlined in this plan. It is not a vegetarian-friendly eating plan.

The Scarsdale Diet Menus

Day 1

Coffee or tea prepared with sugar substitute. Also add 1/2 a grapefruit. This continues to be the breakfast recommendations for the remainder of the week.

For lunch, an unlimited amount of lean chicken, beef or fish. Add one tomato salad and more coffee or tea prepared with fake sugar. There are no directions as how to prepare the tomato salad. For Dinner: broiled fish, tomato salad, grapefruit or melon and another coffee or tea. No amount specified for the fish, salad or fruit.

Day 2

Lunch - unlimited amounts of fruit salad and more coffee or tea. Dinner: Hamburger without the bun and unlimited amounts of cooked vegetables. Add the coffee or tea. For all of the remaining meals, the menu includes the coffee or tea prepared with sugar substitute.

Day 3

Lunch encompasses a tuna salad and either grapefruit or melon. No limits provided. For Dinner, 2 lean pork chops, and a mixed green salad.

Day 4

Lunch: 2 eggs, cottage cheese, 3 ounces of squash and a piece of dry toast. For dinner, grilled chicken, spinach or green peppers. Again - no directions as to amounts of food or how the eggs should be prepared, or their sizes.

Day 5

Lunch: Unlimited amounts of dry cheese [excludes cottage and ricotta cheeses], plus spinach. Dinner: broiled fish, cooked vegetables and a slice of dry toast.

Day 6

Unlimited amounts of fruit salad for lunch. For dinner - broiled chicken, tomato and lettuce salad and either grapefruit or melon.

Day 7

Lunch is a repeat of Day 6's dinner. For dinner, lean beef and a mixed salad.

Our Review

1. The plan doesn't support a pattern for healthy eating. In addition, it cherry picks certain Food Groups rather than picking foods from each group for daily menus.

2. The Scarsdale Diet encourages bingeing. When bingeing involves foods rich in protein, the consequences for heart and kidney patients as well as those with diabetes can prove devastating. In addition, gorging stretches the stomach.
