What Foods are in the Protein Group?

Proteins Contain Multiple Sub-Groups

Animal proteins are just once source for getting our nutritional requirements. We consider this the least-healthy group due to fatty acid content.

Depending upon your gene pool, fatty acid consumption can lead to heart issues - even when consumed in moderate amounts. Opting for the healthier protein choices which hold the healthier fats makes the wiser choice.

Animal Proteins

These category include four sub-groups of its own.

It starts with the basic cuts of meat and the recommendation include 'as lean as possible'. The following meats resides in this sub-group: beef, ham, lamb, pork, and veal.

Game Meats: Bison, rabbit and venison.

Lean Ground Meats: Beef, pork, lamb.

Lean Luncheon or Deli Meats: Roast beef, bologna, ham.

Organ Meats: Heart, liver and giblets.

Poultry Proteins

 


Chicken, duck, goose, turkey and ground chicken or ground turkey.

Eggs

Includes both chicken and duck eggs.

Beans & Peas, Protein List

Bean burgers, black beans, black-eyed peas, chickpeas, falafel, kidney beans, lentils, mature lima beans, Navy beans, pinto beans, soy beans, split and white beans.

Processed Soy Products

Tofu which is bean curd created from soybeans. Also in this list: veggie burgers, tempeh, and texterized vegetable protein [TVP].

Nuts & Seeds, Protein List

Almonds, cashews, hazelnuts or filberts, mixed nuts, peanuts, pecans, black walnuts, English walnuts, peanut butter and other nut based butters, pistachios, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and sunflower seeds.

Seafood Protein Lists

There are three sub-groups within this category: Finfish, Shellfish and Canned Fish.

Finfish: Catfish, cod, flounder, haddock, halibut, herring, mackerel, pollock, porgy, salmon, sea bass, snapper, swordfish, trout and tuna.

Shellfish: Clams, crab, crayfish, lobster, mussels, octopus, oysters, scallops, squid or calamari, and shrimp.

Canned Fish: Anchovies, clams, tuna, sardines and salmon.
