Fish is one of the lowest calorie sources for protein in the diet but when it's heaped with white creamy tartar sauce, the calorie count flies right out of the whale's blow-hole.

With that in mind, we created a luscious tartar sauce recipe with our Magic Bullet that's so smooth, it reeks of Diet Jazz. Oh - and it's low in calories too, man....(snap fingers) (snap fingers) (base guitar twang).

How many calories in tartar sauce?

Bottled tartar sauce contains about 60 calories per two Tablespoons with over five grams of total dietary fat per serving.

McDonald's delicious Fillet-O-Fish contains a trim 289 calories without tartar sauce. If we were to remove the cheese - the caloric value will decrease by about 50 calories. That's a pretty skinny fish sandwich and difficult to beat when it comes to flavor. It's generally my choice when dining at McDonalds. I don't care for the cheese so I ask for that to be omitted and for the tartar sauce to be reduced. With the cheese and tartar sauce the sandwich contains 410 calories.

The Burger King BK Big Fish® contains 640 calories and 32 total dietary fat grams but it is a much larger sandwich than the McDonald's Fillet-O-Fish. If we add additional tartar sauce to the Big Fish it jumps to 810 calories with 50 total dietary fat grams. Therefore the tartar sauce alone contains a whopping 170 calories.

Load the following ingredients into your Magic Bullet using the large loading tube:

pin_red.gif 1/2 cup of LIGHT Miracle Whip (it's twangy, too)

pin_red.gif shot of lemon juice

pin_red.gif dash of ground paprika

pin_red.gif 1 teaspoon of pickle relish

pin_red.gif 1 raw boiler onion (tiny fresh onion found in produce isle) OR you can use your favorite minced onion

Weight Loss Tips for Fish

Steer clear of battered and fried beauties to save fat and calories. If you do ordered fried and battered fish - such as found in fast food fish sandwiches, be sure to know the calorie damage before doing such. Foods that are dipped in batter, then dipped in oil, then dipped once more in a sauce are going to contain about three times the calories as their un-dipped peers. Each dipping adds about 100 calories to the fish.

Salmon tastes heavenly when prepared in a toaster oven. Simply wash, place skin-down on a piece of foil that has been sprayed with cooking spray to prevent sticking, then dust the salmon with lemon pepper. Roast until fish is golden brown and flaky.

Healthier, low calorie options for tartar sauce include catsup, lemon juice, lime juice and herbal seasonings that permeate the fish which add so much flavor that dipping sauces aren't necessary. A great herb to start with is rosemary.

So how skinny is fish in caloric value?

Flat fish like flounder contain only 73 calories for three ounces.

Three ounces of catfish cooked over dry heat contains 89 calories. It's one of the fattier fish.

Atlantic cod contains 89 calories per three ounces and about 1/3 the total fat grams of catfish.
