About Gravy Calories & Fat

Gravy tends to be very high in calories. When choosing keep these things in mind while dieting:

- Broth-based gravies are lower in calories than cream-based gravies.

- Gravies prepared without grease drippings (such as bacon or sausage gravy) are much kinder to the diet.

As a kid I remember that my mom saved her bacon grease as well as other grease in a sealed container on her stove top. She would add bacon grease to a variety of our foods - from green beans to gravy. I'm sure that my arteries and veins can testify to such and I'm sure that one day they will speak out and make their clogged selves be known.

When I grew up, I mirrored my mom - keeping a container on the stove top that held excess bacon grease. Then came my big diet after I blew-up to more than two times my recommended weight. Off went the container of grease from my stove top and off went the pounds. And a lot of other stuff when off too - like not eating as much as I once did, not eating at all times of the day and so forth. Sure, it's still difficult for me to remain at my recommended weight - even going on two decades now. But I'm also sure that if I had not lost the weight, along with the grease, I wouldn't be here right now.

On that note, here are our favorite Magic Bullet gravy tips that I hope can assist you on your weight loss plan. Stay motivated, watch your diet - particularly where gravy is concerned. It's hefty in caloric value - about 50 calories per 1/4 cup serving.

Magic Bullet Diet Gravy Tips

pin_red.gif Use 1 cup of skim milk plus 1 Tablespoon of white flour (or cornstarch) plus salt and pepper to create smooth, light gravy.  Simple combine cool ingredients and whip in your Magic Bullet, then place into microwave until thickened. This recipe for skinny gravy contains about 100 calories for the entire cup in comparison to 200 calories for common gravy.

pin_red.gif You can also create a broth-based low calorie gravy by using the recipe above, only substitute 1 cup of your favorite broth for the skim milk. The use of cornstarch over flour tends to create a smoother gravy that is velvety in texture. You can mix the cornstarch with a little water to loosen it up before adding to the milk or broth. This will guarantee - no lumps!

pin_red.gif Many times, foods that appear to be in need of gravy taste better when topped with something fruity.  Rather than bathing a pork chop or a slice of ham in red-eye gravy, try topping it with a mix of the following:

1/4 can of whole cranberry sauce
shot of orange juice
1 teaspoon of orange marmalade

Whirl the above ingredients in your Magic Bullet then heat in the microwave using the vented lid.  The recipe above supplies enough glaze to top several servings of meat.
