The following nutritional data is based on the kid's menu selections found at popular fast food restaurants.
More and more of our kids are experiencing serious health issues, including those involving the most vital of organs: the heart. Making the healthiest choices, even when fast food or restaurant dining, can work towards a healthier body as it ages.
How to Read Nutrition Fact Data
There are several nutritional elements that you should monitor when evaluating the healthiness of a menu item.
1. Fatty acid distribution - and lipids include monounsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, saturated and Trans fat and cholesterol content.
When ordering you should pay careful attention to the fat distribution of the menu selection; those that contains Trans fat as well as a big bulk of saturated fat aren't going to be as healthy of a choice for your child as those which are at minimal levels.
For example, the A & W Kid's Hamburger contains 7 grams of saturated fat, 3.5 grams of Trans fat and 420 calories.
With this choice, it's not so much the total calorie values that stand out - or even the 22 total fat grams; it's those extremely unhealthy 3.5 Trans fat grams.
Trans fat is considered the most damaging of fats with saturated fat trailing close behind. Both serve to clog and block arteries - and it's not just for adults anymore.
2. Calories. While fats, sugars, dietary fiber and other nutritional elements influence the values of the foods we eat, the amount of energy values - commonly referred to as calories and measured by kcals - remains and will always remain the dominating force which determines body weight.
What we weigh isn't based on the number of carbohydrates we consume OR the amount of fat OR dietary fiber OR protein OR even sugar.
It's based on the amount of energy we consume via foods and drinks - in conjunction with the amount of energy that is used by the body during the day. Together, these determine body weight. Energy in, energy out equals total body weight.
