Fish & Your Child's Diet

Take note that there are guidelines regarding fish intake for all of us, including kids, pregnant and lactating women.

The larger fish pose the most significant health risks because they are capable of absorbing more methyl mercury.

Check with your child's doctor for recommended amounts. And when eating tuna, the Albacore has an increased risk over light and dark varieties. That's unfortunate because Albacore is my favorite type of tuna.

Sodium at Long John Silvers

The Chicken Plank is significantly less salty that the Battered Fish. The chicken plank contains close to 500 milligrams of salt whereas the fish - it's almost doubled in sodium content. Keep in mind that fish from the sea is naturally salty. Added salt, such as done during the battering phase, serves to enhance the salty taste intensely.

We stopped in at our local Long John Silvers the other day and my fish was basically inedible because it tasted so salty. It was a shame because the fish is so delicious - flaky and white. But the excess salt ruins the dining experience. I managed to eat 1/2 of the fish and was rewarded with water retention issues. Nevermore....

I keep saying that I'm going to avoid dining at Long John Silver's until they do something about reducing the salt content, but this time it's going to stick. Along with 1/2 of the fish fillet I had one hushpuppy and only a few of the fries - and I brushed off as much salt from them as possible.

I brought along a fresh pear and had a couple of bananas later in the day, hoping the added potassium would assist in flushing out the retained water. Because I type so much, when my fingers swell it's quite painful. Nonetheless, because of the water retention I didn't have anything else to eat yesterday.

However, if you don't experience the side-effects of salty foods - then you should be fine in ordering from the menu.

Sodium at Long John Silvers

Keep in mind that the Chicken Plank is about one-half the calories of the battered fish.

The Hushpuppy is basically a wad of seasoned fried batter which doesn't lend significant nutritional values - and it contains Trans Fat, as does the other items listed in our data chart. The fish and chicken options are rich in Trans Fat grams.

Trans Fats contained in foods or beverages should be a genuine concern for adults, and an even greater concern for children.
