Foods That Bloat

Foods That Cause Abdominal Bloating

Almost all foods are capable of causing bloat in the human body, but some are more powerful foes than others. Let's take a look at the five food groups and identify the worst offenders - but first a word about heartburn as it is often accompanied with bloating.

If you're experiencing heartburn frequently, keep in mind that your body may be trying to tell you something. Foods from the protein, grain and dairy groups contribute to high acidity within the body while fruits from the vegetable and fruit groups create a more alkaline pH level.

By adding more vegetables and fruits to your daily diet - particularly those rich in Vitamin C content, you may be able to cure your heartburn issues. While fruits and other foods which are rich sources of Vitamin C may appear to cause acidity issues, they actually revert to an alkaline state amid the metabolic process. The foods highest in acidity? Sugar substitutes and carbonated drinks.

Foods Than Cause Bloat in the Dairy Group

Milk, buttermilk, eggnog and yogurt.

There are over the counter remedies which can fight bloat. The issue is the body's inability to process certain properties found in the food; these OTC remedies contain enzymes which can assist - but not always.

Foods Than Trigger Bloating in the Vegetable Group

Broccoli, cabbage of all varieties, onions, leeks, garlic, shallots, okra, yellow and white squash, radish, leaf lettuces, cucumber, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, greens of all varieties and corn.

Foods that are kinder to the gut include white potatoes, beets, zucchini squash, iceberg lettuce, celery and carrots.

Foods Than Cause Bloat in the Grain Group

The worst offenders include oats and cereals that are prepared with whole grains. Those cereals which contain a good dose of dietary fiber will also contribute heavily to bloating issues.

Many of the foods which are included in our daily diet which count towards grain group selections are mined with additives which can also create massive bloating issues.

Foods Than Bloat in the Protein Group

These include nuts, nut butters, eggs, edible seeds such as pumpkin and sunflower seeds, beans and other members of the legume family.

Foods Than Bloat in the Fruit Group

All fruits cause bloating but the fruits which create the most issues with bloat include watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon - and other melons such as red, orange and yellow meat melons, pumpkin, tomatoes, avocado, pineapple, banana, strawberries, apples, dried plums [prunes], and coconuts.
