Are Eggs Acidic?

Article by Diet Bites

Eggs & Acidity

Proteins are quite harsh on the body, particularly our urinary tract system. This is in-part due to how the body processes proteins. Too much of a good thing and we can end-up with a body that is overly acidic.

Eggs are slightly acidic after going through the metabolic process with the white being more-so than the yolk.

Fruits & Vegetables Equals Best Choices in Combating Acidity Issues

The low acid-forming foods are found in the fruit and vegetable groups.

All meat, almost all dairy and all grains work to create acid conditions within the body and must be balanced with the alkaline-forming fruits and vegetables.

While a cup of grapefruit or orange juice might appear to be highly acidic to the body, once the digestive process begins, these foods become alkaline in nature amid the metabolic process.

Egg Whites More Acidic Than the Yolk

Where eggs are involved, the white is more acidic than the yolk once ingested and the metabolic process begins.

Let's use the large egg as our example. One large contains 6.30 grams of protein. The white contains 3.60 grams of protein while the yolk, 2.70 grams. Now let's look at the fat distribution based on one large egg:

While the white contains virtually zero fatty acid content, it holds more protein values thus is more acid-forming than the yolk.

The yolk also contains values from the healthier fats, as well as the unhealthier fats. And of course, the cholesterol values are certainly concerning.

Acidity Levels

The soft-cooked yolk is considered slightly alkaline to neutral with a pH 7.0. Whole eggs which are hard-boiled have a moderate acid pH of 6.0 to 6.5. The whites are slightly acid to neutral with a pH 7.0 to 9.0.

The Acidic Body

The human body works best when everything is in balance.

Being too acidic or too alkaline pose health risks - at times significant.

What's so interesting about acidity levels within the body is that often the foods that eat are acidic in composite - yet amid the metabolic process they become alkaline.

Such is the case with foods which are rich sources of Vitamin C - such as lemons and watermelon. These two fruits are the highest alkaline forming foods once they enter the digestive system.
