Meditating on Medications

Are medications, including over the counter medications  worth the health risks?

We do it so easily these days - we hurt, we ache and we pop a little pill or potion that is guaranteed to cure all our ills. In this aggressive age of advertising, more than ever the common public is aware of the potential danger of prescription drugs. But how safe are over-the-counter medications?

While most provide effective, safe relief when taken as directed, some individuals are sensitive to over-the-counter product ingredients. Even aspirin - one of the most simple pain remedies over the ages can cause a severe allergic reaction in some individuals.

As a rule of thumb, consulting with your doctor on which over-the-counter medications are best for you is wise - but not always convenient. In such situations, weighing the risks or side effects of the medication against the severity of your condition is important. For example, your allergy is on the rise and your eyes are itching like crazy. Generally, you reach for an over-the-counter allergy medication, but it tends to make you drowsy for several hours. If it's close to bedtime, the medication might be ideal, but if you're still at work and will soon be driving home - it's not worth the risk.
