Seniors that live longer tend to be engrossed in a favorite activity or hobby. Most centenarians claim that they are so excited about the things in their lives that they can't wait to pop out of bed in the mornings.

What a valuable piece of knowledge for us all!

So many years of our lives are devoted to our careers, raising our children and the basic things necessary for survival that we don't have time to focus on doing something that really gives us joy.

Here are a few thoughts that may help when trying to pinpoint something in life worth popping out of bed for when morning heralds:

Do you like instant gratification or do you prefer to patiently watch a masterpiece unfold?

If you like instant gratification, you may enjoy the following hobbies: any type of collection - from coins to stamps; repairing broken objects such as watches, toys, jewelry.

You may also enjoy nature walks where you can gather elements of nature such as fossils and petrified wood.  You may enjoy the art of flower pressing.img1.gif

If you prefer patience you may enjoy the following hobbies: painting, wood carving and needlepoint.

You may enjoy putting together a genealogy book of your family - something that will be valued for generations to come.

You may also enjoy creating a storybook photo album or scrapbook.  You can even create a beautiful handmade cover for your storybook.

If you enjoy baking and if funds allow, your family members, friends and associates may be delighted over your talent. A plate of assorted cookies, some fresh baked gourmet bread, beautiful fruit preserves and jams - there are so many foods that transport well and make fine gifts that show how much you care about a person while adding a lift to their life.

If you are good at giving advice, there are multiple areas where your expertise can be put to great use. Consider volunteering at church or at a local group. If you are knowledgeable in a particular field, the possibilities are endless and your sage advice will certainly be appreciated. If you live near a state park and are a nature buff, see if they can use your expertise. At your church, you may be of use for counseling engaged couples. And if you enjoy animals, your local animal shelter would benefit from your knowledge and volunteer service.

Just because we age doesn't mean that we have to curl up into a ball and hide in the corner. And yes, in some situations our health degrades to a point to where we want to continue to do things but there are things that simply can no longer do.

If this is the situation, look for new hobbies and sources of entertainment that you might enjoy. Think about taking up painting - even if it's a paint by number set. If you like to take photos, then you can find great joy in this hobby. There is always something new to photograph.

Whatever you want to do, be sure and embrace that special something. You may find yourself waking up in the mornings and jumping out of bed to start your day - anxious to get to that special something that brings so much personal joy into your life. For as long as you can remember, you probably tended to the needs of others in your life; there comes a time when you should take time to enjoy life, too.
