The Diet Tree of Life
- Expectancy Based on Genes©
What we
weigh is governed greatly by our Family Tree. We begin
with the genes passed down to us, the skeleton -
and we even inherit certain medical ills such as diabetes.
Because
our families are a mix of two other families, we may
have parents that consist of a thin father and a plump
mother. Although we may not get our plump mom's double
chin, we may inherit her sister's wide hips.
But coming
from a family that tends to weigh heavily on the Diet
Scale rather than on the thin side does not always mean
that we're going to have a short life span.
In fact,
I recall two family members of mine who would be considered
by the general public as extremely obese - yet one lived
to 100 years, the other well into their 80's. Both
were female; both had worked very hard in their lives,
particularly in their younger years on the farm.
My Great
Aunt Mae was my skinny grandfather's sister. My
Great Grandmother Taylor was my father's grandmother,
and I believe that she would have lived much longer
if her probable diabetes had been diagnosed. As
I look back, I clearly see the symptoms that years ago,
went unnoticed by many because the general public was
still in the process of being educated on diabetes.
Although
we can increase our life span by imploring a healthy
daily diet combined with moderate activity, the genes
that we inherit rule greatly in our life expectancy.
