Weight Loss - Types of Daily Diets

Written by Sky Taylor, Diet Bites

Diet Article: A healthy diet equals a successful weight loss plan.

Choose the best response to this statement: "My daily diet is closest to the following:"

a. Based on the Official Food Pyramid

While it's our best pattern in America for good health, the Food Pyramid has some substantial faults.

- Foods residing within certain food groups may differ in caloric content.

- An individual may pattern their daily diet on the Food Pyramid and still experience weight gain issues.

- Because recommended servings vary, it's difficult to personally manage a daily diet built upon the Food Pyramid.

- The amount of food that should be consumed amid one meal or setting remains undefined.

- There is a vast variance of nutrients in foods residing within the same food groups. In addition, serving sizes are not identified.

- The term 'glass' is used instead of 'cup'. There can be a vast difference in a cup of milk and a glass of milk when that glass holds three or more cups.

It's also important to keep in mind that Americans suffer from heart disease with those who embrace the Mediterranean Diet have a significantly decreased risk for heart disease. Unfortunately, those on the  Mediterranean Diet suffer twice the incident of strokes. Given such, it might be a good idea to combine the best of both diets.

b. My diet is a Vegetarian Diet.

A Vegetarian Diet is a very healthy daily diet as long as the vegetarian ensure that all of their required vitamins and nutrients are met. This is generally quite easy unless the dieter omits dairy foods from their daily menu. As a note, there are several different types of vegetarians from moderate to strict.

Forms of plant and animal proteins that are generally embraced by the vegetarian include: nuts, seeds, eggs and peanut butter.

c. My daily diet is a Flexaterian Diet.

A Flexaterian Diet is one that contains very little animal protein. Unlike the Vegetarian Diet where animal proteins are totally abolished, the Flexaterian Diet does contain some meats such as fish and chicken.

Generally, red meats as well as pork and lamb are avoided. The flexaterian dieter tends to make plant proteins their central diet and will only enjoy animal proteins occasionally.

d. I eat a Raw Food Diet OR a Natural Food Diet.

Foods that are raw or that are natural in form contain the fewest number of calories. Raw foods promote dental health and the foods are mined with the richest sources of vitamins and minerals. Cooking methods at times will remove such, making that once-healthy food not so healthy anymore.

Natural and raw foods tend to be purchased in organic form.

All of the above diets can be healthy diets when they incorporate foods from the official food pyramid.

Some notes regarding special diets: Nuts, seeds, eggs, nut butters and beans may be substituted for meat as protein sources.

Keep in mind that the healthiest diet for you is the diet that makes you feel the best. As a note, dieters who follow a special diet such as the Raw Food or Vegetarian Diet may benefit by meeting with their nutritionist or doctor to discuss the foods incorporated in their daily diet.
