Tips for Soup & Your Diet Plan

1. Opt for the reduced sodium varieties of commercially prepared soups as too much salt can cause water retention issues.

2. Seek broth based over cream based to save calories and fat grams.

3. Pack your soup recipe with fresh vegetables as most contain minimal calories.

4. When adding meat to the soup pot be sure to remove the visible fat and only use the leanest cuts of meat.

5. When preparing commercial soups try adding milk rather than water when applicable. The milk will provide calcium benefits that support bone health - and it's classified as a complete protein.

6. When preparing homemade, allow the soup to cool. Any fat should rise and solidify at the top where it can be removed.

7. Watch the side items that you enjoy. Crackers contain about 10 calories each. Cornbread - much more, depending upon the recipe used and the ingredients therein. And if you love margarine or butter and you start adding that to the warm cornbread, the energy values will skyrocket.

8. Think 'simple' when dieting. Rather than planning an elaborate 'skinny' plate of food, opt for a simple bowl of tomato soup and a cheese sandwich prepared with reduced fat cheese, light Mayo, green leaves of lettuce and a few slices of sun-ripened tomato.

9. Create a quick homemade potato soup using leftover mashed potatoes, a pat of margarine and reduced fat milk. Top with a few crumbles of bacon that has been cooked in your microwave as well as shredded low fat cheese.

10. Soups also make a nice snack.
