Dry Ingredients for Chocolate Bread:

2½ cups of all purpose flour - about 1,000 calories
1½ teaspoons baking soda
¾ cup of white granulated sugar - about 600 calories
¾ cup of cocoa, dark or regular, unsweetened - about 100 calories
½ teaspoon of salt

Wet Ingredients for Chocolate Bread:

½ cup of margarine, melted - we used margarine that contained 60 calories per serving for a total of 240 calories
1¼ cups of reduced fat buttermilk OR 1¼ cups of low fat milk + 1 teaspoon of white vinegar (allow to sit together and mingle for 5 minutes) - 120 calories
1 egg, slightly beaten - 70 calories
1 teaspoon of vanilla
¼ cup of chopped walnuts OR pecans - we opted for chopped walnuts for about 200 calories

To prepare Chocolate Bread, set the nuts aside and add the first five (dry) ingredients to a big bowl and stir to combine - then stir together the remaining wet ingredients in a smaller bowl. Combine the dry and wet mixtures, then fold in the walnuts.

Transfer Chocolate Bread batter to a 9 x 5 loaf pan that has been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray. Bake the Chocolate Bread in a 350° preheated oven for about 1 hour - or until toothpick can be inserted in the middle of the loaf and comes out clean. Allow Chocolate Bread to cool completely before sealing to prevent sweating - which in turn equals a wet lump of bread.
