Red Table Wine Calories

One fluid ounce contains about 25 kcals while five ounces contains about 125 kcals. Different brands will vary slightly in energy content.

How much wine per day?

A drink is based on 5 ounces of wine OR 12 ounces of beer OR 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits.

* Women, one drink daily.

* Men - one drink for men over age 65 and two drinks for younger men. The increased amount for younger men is due to increased weigh in comparison to women. In addition, men have an increase in an enzyme which metabolizes wine - as well as other alcohol-based beverages more efficiently than women.

Too much of a good thing may lead to the following health woes: high blood pressure, pancreatic disease, heart disease, liver disease, cancers, stroke, risk of accidents, mental disturbances including violence and suicide, and increase in weight that can lead to obesity due to the high caloric content of alcohol-based drinks.

Resveratrol in Wine & Health Benefits

Red wine contains more resveratrol content than white because it is fermented with the skins of the grapes for longer periods than white wines. The amount of resveratrol contained in wine can vary greatly, depending upon the types of grapes used and the wine is processed.

The resveratrol in wine may combat damage to blood vessels, thus supporting heart health. Resveratrol may also decrease bad cholesterol levels in the body - the LDL, Low-Density Lipoprotein cholesterol.

Resveratrol may also reduce inflammation in the body and assist blood clotting. Both pose higher risk of heart disease.

Nutritional Benefits of Wine

When consumed in moderation wine may:

* Increase good cholesterol levels in the body.

* Support the lining of blood vessels, thus improving function and boosting circulatory health.

* Reduce formation of blood clots that can trigger heart attack or stroke.

* Low-Density Lipoprotein cholesterol is associated with artery damage. Wine may help prevent damage to arteries that is due to unhealthy LDL cholesterol levels.
