Nutrition Data & Information

The Incredible Kumquat

These incredible fruits are native to China. They are comprised chiefly of water - about 15 grams per single fruit, not counting the refuse. And they are a dieter's dream, containing a tiny 13 calories for one fruit. But to enjoy, you may opt to squeeze out the juice of the fruit and just enjoy the rind.

The rind of this fruit is typically sweet, but the meat is quite sour. The fruit also contains very tiny seeds which can be removed before consumption OR discarded much like watermelon seeds - spit from the beak. Discreetly, of course.

The leaf is not edible but often used as a decoration.

Good News for Waist Watchers

Kumquats may assist in combating obesity. They also work to promote a healthy immune system as they excel in antioxidant power.

They may also aid in healthy digestion, fight diabetes, and assist in maintaining a healthy blood pressure reading.

Nutritional Values of the Kumquat

There are also nutritional notes in the area of protein, ash, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and niacin.

The amount of the B-Vitamins is quite minimal in the kumquat, but others make an appearance. They include Vitamin A at 55 IU, a slight amount of Vitamin E, and an impressive showing for Vitamin C at 8.3 milligrams per fruit.

That tiny fruit also provides 35 mg's of potassium and 12 mg's of calcium. It's very low in fat which is yet another healthy benefit.

Traditional Use of Kumquats

They are generally used in jams and preserves - particularly marmalade. They are also used in chutneys, citrus based recipes, cocktails and liqueurs.
