Nutrition Facts for French Toast

This lovely bread is dipped into egg, then generally fried in butter. Once it jumps out of the pan, be careful because it just might kiss you. It's then sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Two slices of French Toast contain close to 400 calories if purchased at a restaurant - fast food included. Needless to say, it can be very high in calories.

These two slices will contain well over 100 milligrams of cholesterol, about 8 grams of saturated fat, close to 40 carbohydrate grams, and almost 20 grams of total fat.

However, if the French Toast is prepared at home, there are several calorie and fat-saving techniques that can be used.

- Choose bread that is no more than 70 calories per slice.
- Use a non-stick pan and butter spray along with minimal butter OR margarine when frying.
- OR, enjoy one slice rather than two.
- Omit other toppings, such as maple syrup.....and that's a real bummer.

Diet Bites has a delicious bread recipe for dieters that may make one forget all about that high-calorie French Toast....

Outback Bread - A yummy yet easy lower calorie, low fat recipe for bread that can be whipped-up quickly! Let's get right to our recipe:

Recipe for Lower Calorie, Lower Fat Outback Bread

3 cups of all-purpose flour
1¼ teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of balsamic vinegar
1 Tablespoon of granulated white sugar
1½ cups of warm water
2 packages of yeast

As a note, this bread recipe creates a very rustic, very delicious round loaf of bread. Begin by combining the above ingredients and knead for about 5-7 minutes. Transfer to a well-oiled bowl and cover with a very thick damp towel, and cover the damp towel with a dry towel.

Microwave for about 20 seconds. Walk away and allow to stand for about five minutes. Microwave for another 20 seconds. Remove and allow to rest for 20 minutes.

We bake our Outback Bread in a deep oven-proof pot with the lid in place for 30 minutes at 450 degrees. We then remove the lid and continue to bake for another 10 minutes - or until top reaches a beautiful golden brown.

You can also rub a bit of olive oil on top of the bread before beginning the baking process.

Entire recipe contains about 1,250 calories and delivers several servings.
