The Sponge Cake, An Innocent Dessert
There are desserts....and then there are desserts. The sponge cake is one that can easily fit into most weight loss plans.
It is often referred to as 'angel food' cake because it is snow white and pure, and it's also light and fluffy - like it might fly off the dessert plate!
It can also be enjoyed without the frosting. In fact, I don't think it's very tasty when iced. The sponge cake recipe uses a lot of egg whites and they seem to collide with the frosting. But that's just me; others may thoroughly approve.
The reason why I think that 'angel food' is appropriate is due to its minimal number of calories contained therein. A serving contains about 100 calories. What a diet deal!
Toppings for Your Angel Food Cake
Fresh sliced fruit makes an exceptional, healthy option as a topping for sponge cake.
Drizzle some fruit puree on top of the fresh sliced fruit to take it to another tasty level.
Add a dollop of whipped topping OR real whipped cream. A serving of regular whip cream in a spray can actually contains less than a serving of most brands of whipped topping. And it's the real deal.
Simply add a serving of whipped cream and sprinkle with coconut.
OR, add a slice of pineapple to the top of your cake, sprinkle with one teaspoon of either dark or light brown sugar, add a sweet cherry from a jar, and top it off with a serving of whipped cream.
If you purchase the round sponge cakes at your local market, most have an indentation on the top due to the manufacturer's baking methods OR molds.
A chocolate ganache can fill that space. The traditional ganache recipe creates a soft chocolate. Top with whipped cream - or add slices of sweet strawberries before added the topping.
