Chocolate Cake Too High in Calories to be a Regular Part of a Weight Loss Plan

Unfortunately, chocolate really isn't one of the Basic 5 Food Groups, but oh don't we wish it were!

So...how many calories will that non-food-group item cost you?

That divine piece of chocolate cake contains about 235 calories based on a small cake - about the size of an iced cupcake.

When we move up to the big boy cakes, depending upon the recipe it can hold 600+ calories and that's for a small wedge. Why such a vast difference in caloric values?

Fat. Yellow fat to be specific. As in butter. Those divine chocolate wonders are typically mined with butter and at times, sour cream as well as its best buddy, cream cheese.

Rich in Fat, Calories & Cholesterol

It's not just the energy values though. This bad boy also contains considerable amounts of fatty acids, particularly cholesterol. Keep in mind that most recipes call for 3 eggs, which are a very rich source for cholesterol.

Some chefs might add more than three to create a velvety texture. Some home chefs might even add a package of pudding mix to their recipe.

Frosting Matters

Frosting can be as simple as a bit of powdered sugar mixed with a bit of milk. Or it can be as complex as powdered sugar mixed with lots of butter, lots of cream cheese OR vegetable shortening. And let me tell you....this type of vegetable isn't a dieter's friend.

Your best defense against weight gain and a healthy body is to refer to the nutrition label when provided. If you're dining out, modern times have forced restaurants to provide nutritional details - calories, fat content, Trans fat amounts, dietary fiber, carbohydrates and sugar amount in the items on the menu. Simply ask your server for a nutrition guide for the restaurant OR the fast food joint you're visiting.

In Summary

However, the good news is that you can enjoy a cupcake - or even a small slice of your favorite cake while trying to lose weight. Just be sure to include the calories in you set daily allotted amount for energy values.
