The Main EntreesJim went to meet his brother for lunch at Chili's and as he entered the restaurant, all of those wonderful aromas filled his nostrils. He was sure hungry - and he already knew what he wanted to order from the extensive menu. Country Fried Steak - and perhaps an Awesome Blossom appetizer that he could share with his brother Sam. Maybe a slab of pie, too for dessert. Sam was already seated in a booth and he smiled as he greeted Jim. They rarely met for lunch - something that both men suddenly mulled over, wishing that they would do such more often. "What's up, big brother?" Jim asked, reaching for the menu. He liked looking at it, even though he knew what he had planned to order. "Not good news, little brother. You remember that doctor's appointment that I told you about last week?" "Yeah. You were going in for a check up as you've dropped some significant amount of weight - and you said that you seemed to be unable to quench your thirst," Jim eased out, suddenly tensing. Something was wrong and he was a bit worried. "What did the doc say?" "Diabetes." Jim didn't say a thing. Both were aware that the disease ran in the family - their tree was full of loved ones who had died from it over the years. Both Sam and Jim were grossly overweight and they knew that it was perhaps a matter of time before they too would succumb to the disease. When Jim was finally able to speak he eased out, "Looks like we're going to need to join a fitness club, bro. We'll get healthier, together. I'll help you." Sam delivered a warm smile and reached over to pat Jim's hand. "Thanks, man. I knew that I could count on you for support. The doc said that if I'd lose these extra seventy-five pounds on me - I can get by without meds. You know - handle things with a healthy diet."
"We'll get there," Jim promised, meaning every word. He had seen far too many people in his family take the wrong route and he wasn't going to let that happen to Sam. "Now about lunch, I was thinking we'd both have a bowl of soup - and we'll get the server's advice on their skinniest recipes. Okay by you?" "Sounds perfect, bro."
