Little or Big Legs?

There are actually a couple of methods of getting legs from the chicken. There is the actual 'real deal' that is connected to the thigh - and then there is the little drumette that is part of the wing.

The later tends to work best for appetizers while the big boy works best for the meal plate.

Each drumstick contains about 238 kcals - but of course that amount varies greatly depending upon the size. Some contain 150 or fewer kcals.

If we leave the back and thigh attached, then we're looking at some fairly significant kcals - over 700.

Best Cooking Methods for Chicken Legs

The best preparation method which serves to keep calories as minimal as possible includes roasting - whether it's done on the grill, in the oven or on the stove top in a deep non-stick pan. Boiling will also work to keep the negative values low.

One sure-fire way to increase those negative values (kcals and fatty acids) is to dip them into a batter, then dip them into oil, then dip them into a dipping sauce. Too much of such tips the nutritional scales - as well as the bathroom scales in the wrong direction.

Adding Bacon Amid the Cooking Process

If the amount of set calories in your weight loss plan can allow for a few more, one method for getting an intense flavor out of this cut of the chicken - but which will also add some negative nutrition notes to the leg, although not nearly as much as all that dipping stuff, is to wrap the wrap the leg with a strip of the leanest and thinnest strip of bacon possible, then roast in the oven.

Another cooking tip that will bring out the flavor without adding a plethora of fat or kcals is to lightly salt the portion and add a lot of pepper - but only if you're fond of pepper.

Or, you can sprinkle on a bit of lemon pepper before roasting. Either of these methods adds virtually no added calories.
