Gizzard Me Timbers!

Considered as a delicacy by some individuals and one of the 'icky' foods by others. But if you're into this part of the bird, each gizzard will cost you about 27 kcals - and keep in mind that this number is based on its raw state.

When food cooks, almost all varieties and types will cook down a bit. At times the values increase because more food is able to fit into a cup when cooked than it did in its raw, natural state.

As in the case of animal proteins, when no additional foods or products are added amid the cooking phase, the caloric values tend to shrink - and unlike most foods which are measured per serving by the eye or with a serving spoon or cup, we tend to reach for one or two items off the platter.

Because gizzards are tiny, one isn't going to cut the mustard, even when we're using the spicy variety. I've watched many a human down a dozen of these babies in their fried state in nothing flat.

Hide From Fried

Oh no - there is that word - the 'fried' word. And it has the capability to blow your weight loss plan off this good Father Earth. And where there is oil to be used, the salt shaker isn't far behind along with other delectable seasonings - along with a dipping sauce that is used on the side, generally full-blown ranch. As to those seasonings, they are generally healthy additives as long as they are free of sodium and fatty acid content. But the other ingredients - oh wow, mommy help!

Cholesterol Concerns

Speaking of those naughty fatty acids, the cholesterol content should be a considerable concern as each contains about 70 milligrams of the stuff.

When a dozen or more gizzards are consumed - that's about 1000 mg's of cholesterol, enough to smother the human liver before blocking the pathways (arteries) to the heart.

And that's not even counting the extra mg's that are associated with oil should they be in a fried state which contain about 200 calories per 55 grams, prepared with batter in addition to 200 milligrams of cholesterol and over 600 milligrams of sodium.

As we can quickly see by glancing at our data chart below, the caloric values more than quadruple per 100 grams. Ouch....
