A Smart Menu Choice?

As long as you are aware of the caloric content contained in any food, you are better equipped with knowledge that relates to the planning phase of your diet plan.

Almost any type of food imaginable can be a part of a healthy meal; of course - it's just simple logic that when the food is one that is mined with fat then moderation combined wit common sense needs to be exercised.

While a piece of fried chicken breast with the skin left on can be an occasional star of the meal plate, a heap of chicken skin with a side of buttered bread isn't making the best use of the human brain.

And here is another important key to losing the fat; the size of the portion. For example, let's say that Edward enjoys that skin a lot. Every time his wife Dorothy prepared roasted turkey for a meal, he's the first one there - peeling off the skin and loading it onto his plate. He enjoys the chewy texture, as well as the salty flavor of the skin.

He also has a fondness for his wife's buns; she makes them from scratch and Edward likes to plaster them with a lot of full blown butter.

To keep things from tumbling out of control to where they are too far away from the Food Pyramid, Edward can enjoy a roll or two with a moderate amount of butter. Lighter, reduced fat versions will serve his health better. As to the skin, he can enjoy that too - but again, moderately and only occasionally.

Knowing the Caloric Values

As to chicken and dumplings, remember those kcals that we discussed at the beginning of this article? While homemade tastes best (in our humble opinion) there are many canned varieties, including soups of this nature that can serve the dieter well.

The nutritional labels identify all of the kcals and vital nutrient amounts contained in one serving size - so it's difficult to go ape.

As to the homemade versions, those can be used while losing weight too. Simply calculate the amount of energy values contained within all of the ingredients and divide that number by the number of serving sizes produced.

The following data charts show the nutrition facts for Chicken & Dumplings - Swanson and Sweet Sue. We have also included information for soup prepared with chicken and the classic dumplings.
