White Meat or Dark More Calories?

Which contains the fewest amount of calories, white or dark meat? If we look at the data chart below, we'll note the column that identifies kcals by 100 Grams.

This is the best method to use - one that equalizes the amounts, when trying to determine the true values of foods where energy is involved.

We see that 100 Grams of breast meat contains 172 kcals. If we look at the thigh, the same amount will contain about 219 kcals. The identical amount of legs or drumsticks contains about 214 kcals. Therefore, contrary to common assumption, the dark meat of most poultry contains less calories than the white.

If we switch to examining just the pieces of the bird, we'll get a different combination of results. It's important to keep in mind that some parts of the chicken are larger than others. In addition, the breast from one bird may also be larger or smaller than one from another.

So again, let's look at the per-gram values. One normal size chicken breast contains about 300 kcals. If we look at the energy values contained in one thigh in its raw state - and please note that this is what we have based all of our caloric values upon in this article - then we'll find that it contains about 414 kcals.

That is more quite a few more calories than contained within the breast. However, let's take a look at the grams contained therein. The thigh we examined - and it was of regular size - contained about 189 grams.

The breast contained 174 grams. We'd need to add about 26 kcals to the breast to equal the grams contained in the thigh - but when everything is said and done, one small chicken breast is fairly comparable in caloric values to one small thigh.

When More Equals More Calories, More Fat

Unfortunately, in today's world the chickens are getting bigger in all areas.

Most of the breasts that can be found at local restaurants and fast food eateries are double-D's.

And a huge breast contains about 500 kcals.

That's enough to do quite a lot of damage to the best of weight loss plans. Therefore, it's important to choose wisely.

The good news is that there is quite a lot of impressive grams of protein locked inside this piece of the bird - over 18 for a normal size and over 30 for that double-D.
