Tropical Super Fruit

The breadfruit is grown and harvested in tropical regions, requiring the warmer temperatures in order to bring it to its maximum peak.

It is not commonly found in the American kitchen and is considered a delicacy by most. When visiting the upper end markets (as it's not generally found at the smaller shops) you can spot it by its large round shape. The specimens are generally about ten inches in length.

It's a very starchy fruit as well as a member of the mulberry family.

The breadfruit is native to the Pacific Islands and can be prepared using a multitude of cooking methods - baking, broiling, frying or roasting being the more commonly used. The flavor has been described in many ways - depending upon one's personal taste buds, from tasting like a potato or baked bread.

It is close to the color (a golden, yellowish hue) and texture of baked bread and is a seedless fruit.

The trees that the breadfruit grows on often reach close to seventy feet in height and all parts of the tree yield a milky 'juice' known as latex.

It offers over two grams of protein grams per cup of raw and is a very rich source for potassium containing over 1000 milligrams per cup. It is also exceptionally low in dietary fat - while rich in fiber content at about 11 grams per cup.
