Super Food, Super Good

This healthy berry contains an impressive amount of dietary fiber due to the little seeds contained therein.

They are just the size that makes it difficult for them to be removed - and it often puts them off the menu of many individuals who don't want to deal with the seeds getting stuck in their teeth.

Unlike other foods that can be tricky to eat, about the only way to adequately remove the seeds is to cook the berry then drain off the juice using a cheesecloth - or other tool that will allow just the juice to pass through.

If we were dealing with an ear of corn, we could simply trim off the kernels and discard the cob - so the blackberry requires a bit more work in order to reach its seedless state.

Personally speaking, I don't mind the seeds at all - or concerns about stains on the enamel or tongue.

As to that dietary fiber, a one cup serving contains a tiny 62 calories and almost eight grams of fiber. In addition, we'll also receive over 200 milligrams of potassium benefits. No wonder this delicious berry is called a super fruit.

There was a time when I was much younger and my father raised berries for the family. They were so sweet right off the vine; then the rattlesnakes moved in as they too liked those berry bushes - particularly the prairie rattlers.

With this said, if you get the opportunity to go berry hunting and harvesting, be sure to take along a pair of thick gloves and wear boots - and keep a close eye out for unwanted guests.

My mother used to prepare cobblers with them; rather than using traditional peaches she simply substituted the blackberries. And then my father ate too much....
