Fiber in Tea, Coffee
|
|
Let's review a few popular drinks and beverages that most dieters consider for their weight loss plan.
Let's begin with Club Soda which contains zero calories. It's a fizzy beverage which is void of cholesterol, sugar and fat but it is also void of dietary fiber. What we like about this drink is that 100% concentrated fruit juice can be added for a refreshing burst of flavor - as well as a burst of good health.
Coffee: Again, no fiber to be found and that's a bummer for those of us who live for coffee. The caffeine based coffees are mined with the stuff - about 102 mgs per cup. And if you like that after-lunch or after-dinner cup of java, try to wait about one hour before doing such because coffee decreases iron absorption in the body by 40% while rendering the B Vitamin inactive.
Associated with the holidays, nogs of all flavors contain an impressive amount of calcium benefits but alas, not dietary fiber grams - based on single serving size, which is generally about 1/2 cup. Per cup, this potion which often consists of a solid cream base with a few added spices - ground nutmeg in particular, contains at minimum in its full-blown stage, 400 calories. Wow - who sunk our diet battleship? The nog did it.
As to those fiber grams - even a quart of the stuff contains zero. As to the calcium benefits: 1 cup, 330 mgs, 1 fluid ounce, 41 mgs, and one quart, 1,321 mgs. That quart also contains about 1,700 mgs of potassium. If only it wasn't so steep in caloric and fat content.

What about that fat content? One cup contains about 11 total fat grams while one quart is over the moon at about 43 total fat grams. But even so, it's not as fatty as many fast food burgers. Burger King's famous (and yes delicious) Whopper contains 40 total fat grams and upwards to 700 calories. Add a slice of cheese and it contains more dietary fat than the full-blown eggnog.
Let's move to the Malted Milk. When prepared with whole milk it contains about 233 calories, 9.59 total fat grams, 10.23 protein grams, 27.11 carbohydrate grams, 25.33 sugar grams, and 0.3 dietary fiber grams. This is based on a one cup serving.
Tea as well as herbal teas and popular sport's drinks also contain zero dietary fiber grams.
Let's see if we can find a drink that is substantial in this area; let's take a look at homemade cocoa. Well gee-willikers, no luck here either - only a bit over 2 grams - but perhaps we can pair our homemade cocoa with a slice of whole grain bread or a whole grain muffin.
Yes, indeed - that will solve things....
