Healthy Diet Tips for Family Desserts

Are you watching the family's diet and needing a dessert recipe that  is low in caloric values as well as dietary fat grams?

If so, Diet Bites has several delicious suggestions that can come to the rescue. We have a mix of simple recipes that are very quick to put together - as well as some savvy suggestions and tips that can assist in reducing fat and calories in desserts, as well as other recipes you choose to set on your family table.

Look for Foods Which are In-Season

If you're a savvy shopper - and we know that you are, you likely shop for fruits that are in-season at your local market.

You can dust the fresh fruit with your favorite ground spices; generally - ground cinnamon compliments most fruits. Top off the fresh fruit with a serving of low fat whipped cream in a spray can for a tiny fifteen calories - or opt for low fat whipped topping if you wish.

Substitute Fresh Mashed Fruit for Sugar in Recipes

When the recipe calls for butter, shortening, oil or lard, grab a banana - or any fresh fruit that would marry well with the other ingredients in the recipe. Mash or puree the fresh fruit - and the riper the fruit, the sweeter the result. Add the mashed fruit cup per cup to the recommended amount of oil to the recipe ingredients. Needless to say, you'll save lots of dietary fat grams and in turn, lots of calories.

Cut Cholesterol by Using Egg Substitutes OR Omitting the Yolk

Use egg substitute rather than eggs in recipes. The current recommendation for egg consumption is one egg per day which includes eggs incorporated into all foods eaten for the day. And by using egg substitute over eggs, you'll also save cholesterol.

Quick Carrot Cake Recipe

Grab a white or butter-flavor cake mix and rather than adding butter or oil, add 1 cup of mashed or pureed carrots, 1 Tablespoon of chopped walnuts or pecans, and a Tablespoon of ground cinnamon.

Substitute the recommended amount of eggs with egg substitute and add enough of the egg substitute to equal six eggs.

Pour the batter into a funnel pan sprayed with non-stick cooking spray and bake for about 40 minutes at 350 degrees in a preheated oven.

Recap of Recipe Ingredients for Quick Carrot Cake, a low calorie recipe

1 white or butter flavored cake mix
1 cup of mashed carrots, cooked
1 Tablespoon of chopped nuts
1 Tablespoon of ground cinnamon
Egg Substitute to equal half a dozen eggs
cooking spray

Skip the sugary icing and instead simply dust the cake with powdered sugar.

Quick Pear Recipe

Peel and core a pear for each family member and place into boiling water. Boil for only five or so minutes - until the pear is hot and tender. Place each into a beautiful serving dish. Dust the outside of the pear with ground cinnamon. Spoon one Tablespoon of honey on each pear.

Gelatin Over Sugary Cakes & Pies

Sugar free gelatin always makes a wonderful quick dessert - as does sugar free, reduced fat pudding. Add your favorite sliced fruit to the gelatin or pudding. Top with light, low fat whipped cream.

You can also add a bit of crumbled cookies into pudding recipes for a few calories more - or you can mix the fruit and pudding together with a serving of low fat whipped topping.
