Fruitarian Diet Review

What is a Fruitarian?

Individuals whose daily diet consists of 75% of fruit selections commonly refer to themselves as fruitarians.

The eating plan also includes nuts and seeds [Protein Group], grains [Grain Group], vegetables [Vegetable Group] but is void of animal products.

There are several subsidiaries of the Fruitarian Diet.

1. The strictest of fruitarians opt to eat specimens that fall free of the plant or tree in order to avoid harm to living organisms.

2. Some individuals do not include grains in their daily eating plan.

3. Some omit seeds and nuts because they contain future seedlings or plants.

4. Other foods that are commonly included by the fruitarian are honey, legumes, olive oil, chocolate, fruit pulses and nectars.

Health Dangers of the Fruitarian Diet

As with all specialized diets that veer from the Food Pyramid, controversy exists. There are reports of all-fruit diets leading to improved health.

On the opposite side of the coin, there are also reports that ended with a trip to the emergency room.

There are also reports that this mode of dieting taxes the pancreas. And of course, the citrus fruits have been shown in numerous studies to impact tooth enamel health.

The chief dangers and risks of a heavily fruit-based diet are deficiencies in B-vitamins, calcium, essential fatty acids, iron, Vitamin D and zinc.

Most fruits tend to be rich sources of potassium. One large papaya contains almost 1000 milligrams of potassium with one extra large banana containing 544 mg's and one medium plantain 893 mg's.

Many are also very minimal in dietary fat content. For example, one watermelon that is 15" long and about 7 1/2 " in diameter contains a scant 6.78 grams of total fat and zero cholesterol.

Let's look at another huge specimen, the honeydew melon. One 7-inch round melon contains only 1.79 grams of total fat. And it's quite nice in protein at 6.91 grams.

But this giant melon contains a scant 1.126 mg's of Vitamin B-6 and 0.000 mg's of Vitamin B-12. In fact, all fruit is deficient in Vitamin B-12 which can only be obtained from animal sources.

The B-Vitamins are essential to the body for good health and nerve function can be impacted greatly when inadequate amounts are in play. On the other hand, an excess of the B-Vitamins can also create issues.

Potential Side Effects of the Fruitarian Diet

Diseases and illnesses related to vitamin and mineral deficiencies - and we'll list examples below.

Anemia. Symptoms vary depending upon the cause but commonly include weakness, fatigue, mental fog, shortness of breath, palpitations of the heart, pale skin or jaundice.

Growth and development issues in children.

Vitamin B-12 deficiency which if severe can cause permanent damage to the nervous system. Symptoms vary but commonly include anemia, issues with the gastrointestinal system, neurological compromises.

In Summary

Diets where fruit is the star for the better portion of the day can post risks to the human body as this Food Group is deficient in many of the essential minerals and vitamins required by the body in order to function.

This type of daily eating plan is considered a fad diet - as are all plans that place the emphasis on one or two particular Food Groups. It is very rare to achieve permanent weight loss success when using a fad mode for losing.

In addition, these fad-based plans may leave the dieter with permanent damage to the body.

Diet Bites does not recommend the Fruitarian Diet or any fad diet as a mode of healthy weight loss.

A qualified doctor should always be consulted before going on a fad diet.
