Free Diet Menu #17 - Cheesy Winnie Wraps

Written by Sky Taylor, Diet Bites

Diet Recipe for Winnie Wraps

Frankly my dear - you will give a ham about these tasty Winnie Dawgs! Why so? Because they are oh-so-low in calories and topped with a delicious slaw.

To keep our Cheesy Winnie Wraps low in calories, we use the leaner 110-calorie franks in our recipe. You can save even more calories by slicking frank in two.

Step 1 - the dough:

Start by using any bread dough to wrap-around frank such as biscuits, garlic cheese dough, bread stick dough, or crescent dough which can be found in the freezer or dairy section at your local market. Next, knead a Tablespoon of shredded cheese into each wrap before wrapping frank.

A little Calorie Note. If you opt for croissant rolls, they tend to be pricey in calories; by the time cheese is added, it's easy to reach the 175-calorie mark which means you'll be enjoying one rather than two tasty Cheesy Winnie Wraps.

For our version, we opted to use biscuits (the dough) containing 50 calories each and we rolled the dough super-thin so that it fit frank.

Step 2 - the frank:

Be sure to use light, lean franks taking care to check the labels before checking out the frank. And don't even think about wrapping up frank before giving him a few turns on the stove-top in a non-stick pan using cooking spray. Cook until he reaches a golden brown state.

Step 3 - the baking:

Bake wrapped-up frank as directed on the dough package.

Step 4 - the slaw:

Our low calorie sweet-slaw recipe makes a tasty addition for almost any hot dog or bugger recipe.

Better yet, you can personalize it to fit your favorite flavor-buds - choosing to make it sweet, sour or savory. The basic recipe is of course, shredded cabbage and carrots.

We add just a dash of celery seed (too much will spoil the recipe), and a spoon or two of Splenda (you can use sugar if you wish for more calories - brown or white).

The sauce which is added to the slaw will influence the final flavors. In the slaw used to top our Cheesy Winnie Wraps, we opted for light Raspberry Walnut Dressing containing 40 calories per serving (2 Tablespoons).

diet frank recipe ingredientBut any of the following work well and all taste delicious: balsamic vinegar (5 calories per serving), light Mayo, light ranch dressing, light French dressing, light Italian dressing, light Catalina dressing, light tartar sauce, sweet & sour sauce, or any of the House of Tsang Chinese sauces.

You can also squeeze the juice of one orange or tangerine or grapefruit onto the slaw for a simple, delicious slaw.

Enjoy 2 Cheesy Winnie Wraps that are heavily topped with the sweet slaw. OR, dip wraps into your favorite mustard and enjoy the slaw as a stand-alone dish.
