The Perfect Summer DietFreshly hatched baby birds squawk from a nearby tree, poison ivy is sprouting all about us, and pappy is scraping last year's bounty from the trusty old grill - why it's no wonder why summer presents the perfect time for dieting! The reasons why Summer is one of the BEST times to DIET! Encroaching Holidays - Yes, before we know it, that jolly old man in the red suit will be knocking at our wreaths. We may even see friends and family that we haven't set eyes on since the last family reunion. Imagine the marvel on their faces when they glimpse a healthier, sleeker YOU! With a two-pound per week rate of weight loss, by the time Thanksgiving rolls around, you'll have more than a giant turkey leg to be thankful for because you will have dropped forty-five pounds or more if you begin dieting in early July.
Swimsuit Issue - If you feel that there is NO time to melt-down into a smaller swimsuit - keep in mind that summer doesn't end until September - and if you're in the deep South, it might never end! The point is that you can quickly drop close to ten pounds in a month, perhaps even more. But then again, who cares about teensy suits being the focus when swimming offers such a great opportunity for burning calories and body-strengthening? There are two ways of saying, "Gee, you've got great lungs." If you don't feel comfortable in a swimsuit, what about cut-offs? Just look how many calories you can burn by swimming!
Salads - Warmer and sometimes down-right hot-as-hell weather presents a great backdrop for cool salads. When it's just too hot to cook, try on these tasty suggestions for a trimmer fit:
Grilling for Weight Loss - That grill has never looked sexier than when standing in the arms of the good old summertime. Pop a few lean cuts of meat onto her warm belly, as well as corn on the cob and other tasty veggies. Don't forget those all-important beans! Diet Lemonade - Those lazy days of summer can also be filled with a tasty cold glass of tart lemonade. For a 5-calorie lemonade, chill a gallon of spring water and add either fresh lemon OR lemon juice concentrate to suit your personal level of tartness. Next, add no-calorie sweetener OR a bit of sugar if you can't stomach no-calorie sweeteners. Top with a cherry OR a mint leaf from your fresh herb garden. What? You don't have a fresh herb garden? Well, you soon will with a bit of help from your local garden center. Even if you don't have a green thumb, herbs are ultra easy to grow and require little attention. I started with a pack of basil seeds that have grown plants bigger than Dallas, to my amazement. Adding a few ready-grown herbs from the garden center such as spearmint, chocolate mint, thyme, rosemary, sage, parsley and dill, my garden is small, but very handy when fresh herbs are needed. And they are so pretty! I would suggest purchasing tiny plants which tend to do better than the big boys during the transplanting phase. Another plus?
