Cutting Calories in Salads

Daily Diet Makeover

With all those healthy greens, tomatoes, cucumbers and mushrooms, one would assume that a salad is extra low in calories.

However, by the time that many of us get through decorating our healthy salad, it isn't so healthy anymore.  Or low in calories, either.

Here are the most common culprits when it comes to hidden calories in salads:

Cutting Salad Calories

  • Shredded cheese overload;
  • Salad is often drowned in high calorie salad dressing;
  • Crackers and croutons add up to big calories;
  • Meats, including strips of fried chicken, are often added to salads, thus sending the calorie content through the Diet Roof;
  • Too much bacon adds too much bacon onto us;
  • Nuts and seeds may be sown too freely.

By opting for a lower calorie salad dressing, as well as going light on the higher calorie ingredients (nuts, cheese, bacon, meats) can cut the calories in salads big time.

Another caveat is that we often feel that because we had a salad at mealtime, we can go wild later in the day which can be a fatal Diet Mistake when salad calories range high.

When dining out, some fast food salad calories are higher than standard fast food fair, such as cheeseburgers.
