Cutting Calories in Pancakes

Article by Diet Bites

Pancakes are perfect any time of day!

And there are so many different ways to prepare them - from neat little fold-overs, to syrup-topped wonders.

But if we're not careful, those calories can really add up - particularly when some brands of syrup contain over 100 calories per 2 Tablespoons. That's equal to about 1/4 of a cup; go collect a measuring cup that is this size and fill it with water.

That's not very much, is it? Or, use a Tablespoon to measure out two servings using the water rather than the syrup.

If you're like most pancake lovers, you're adding far more than the recommended serving size to your morning hotcakes - along with butter or full-blown margarine. Those cakes that started out at about 100 Kcals are suddenly catapulted to over the 500 Kcal mark after they are dunked in syrup and oil.

Let's recap the hot spots when it comes to pancakes:

Butter calories; pure D fat adds pure D pounds and unwanted body fat when intake exceeds the body's needs.

When pancakes are too large, the energy values grow with the size of the cake; it's a no-brainer.

Added whipped cream, jams and sweet preserves.

Tips for Lowering the Kcals in Pancakes

The solutions for lower calorie pancakes are very simple and take minimal time.

Picture of pancakes. Measure out batter to ensure that you're eating the recommended serving size or opt to use commercially prepared versions that can usually be located at the market in the freezer section.

Typical Kcal value equals about 100 for each cake.

Opt for no calorie butter spray or light margarine.

Opt for LIGHT syrup OR sugar free syrup OR a reduced sugar variety. Be sure to measure out the recommended serving size by the nutritional label directions or better yet, opt for fresh fruit as a topping and a little light whipped topping, if desired.

Be sure to cook pancakes with cooking spray rather than using oil to save even more energy values.
