Decorating for Your Holiday Bash - Decking Out the Halls & Walls

Decking out the halls and walls of your home in preparation for your holiday party doesn't have to be expensive.

Here are our favorite tips to help in keeping costs minimal while keeping your party just as fun as if you'd spent a million bucks. Well, almost as fun...

Gathering Decorations From Mother Nature's Back Door

You can gather nuts, grapevines and pine boughs to create beautiful holiday wreaths.

To start creating a wreath, use the grapevine to make a circle - the base for your holiday wreath. It's very easy to work with and winds into a circle quite easily. And it looks very rugged and natural - thus holding eons more beauty than most wreaths created out of manmade plastic products.

You can create a wreath created totally out of nuts, or add the pine boughs to the circle of vine. The very scent of pine makes one think about the holidays. There is just something magical about the scent.

Or, consider adding beautiful ornaments to your wreath - or glue on pine cones. There are a dozen and one directions to take this project, each adding your own personal touches, which is what makes your wreath special.

Christmas Ornaments, Old & New as Decorations

There are some ornaments that I have that are quite old. Some of the paint has worn away; others may have a slight crack. While they are too fragile to hang on the tree, I don't want to throw them away. They may hold a special memory - or just be pretty to the eyes.

One way to make excellent use of these slightly challenged ornaments is to place them into a pretty holiday-themed bowl and use them as a centerpiece OR set them on a side table. They always dazzle.

Natural Fruits for Decorating

If you want a decoration that will be used, you cannot go astray with a basket of fresh fruit and nuts. Your party guests that are dieting will appreciate the natural desserts.

Decking the Walls & Halls for Your Holiday Party

One inexpensive way to add holiday mood to your party is to outline your doors with inexpensive garland or greenery. Attach a few jingle bells to add more mood to the party, and interest.

Nutcrackers, wooden soldiers, Santas, elves and reindeer all add joy to the party mood. Scatter them about the main area of your party. And if kids are going to attend, they will be delighted.  You'll be making lasting memories for these impressionable minds.

Spray the rooms lightly with holiday scented sprays - but if you have animals, you should forego this idea. Sprays can actually create a nice size vet bill as they are too potent for critter's respiratory health.

Add bows, ribbons and candy canes to lamps and other objects throughout the party area. You can string indoor lights around the doors along with the garland, too - and what about creating a snow scene using cotton balls and small lighted houses.

Your local dollar store may have some beautiful little houses that sell for much more at your local supermart. I know that ours does.

Arrange flowers - or strew them about the area to stage the party mood.

As a note, double-check the area to ensure the safety of your guests, including kids and pets.
