Weight Gain Shock & Awe
by Sky Taylor, Diet Bites
A bite here and a bite there and before you know it, your body doesn't even look like your body anymore. That's a tough enough issue to deal with in itself - but enter a few old friends and distant family members who get a good gawk at the 'new & bigger you' and the tongues start wagging. It's a nightmare that is commonly replayed over and over by almost everyone who gains weight.
Take Kim. After a difficulty pregnancy, she found herself forty-five pounds heavier after delivering a bouncing baby boy. On her first trip out of the house to the market, she encountered Darla who just couldn't seem to shut her trap when it come to commenting on Kim's weight gain.
Kim walked away feeling terrible about herself - more to the point, about her weight gain. NO! It was even more than that. Kim was more upset about what Darla thought about her weight gain than she was about the weight gain itself.
As to Darla, she walked away and wasted no time in pursuing a game of Telephone Tag. Guess who the star of her phone conversation was?
Now with all this aside, let's pause to ponder Kim's situation. Although it bugged the dickens out of Kim for Darla to see her 'all blown out', after Darla's round of gossiping - Darla immediately placed thoughts of Kim behind her. She was too busy concentrating on herself - just like we-humans tend to operate.
I must say that I can certainly feel Kim's weight gain pain. When I was at my steepest weight, my 'dear' cousin and her mother were burning film taking my photo like there was no tomorrow. I was so embarrassed - and I don't think they even realized how it made me feel. Then something quite terrible happened. My cousin and aunt begin to pile on so much weight that they made my 'weight gain issue' seem quite trivial. The difference was that I didn't pull out the old camera - and I didn't confront them about their weight gain. Why? Because I'm a goody two shoes? No. Because I knew how it felt to be in that position. And - I could feel their pain. No need to add to that pain.
If you find that you are in a similar position in regards to weight gain - hold your head up high! Keep in mind what was mentioned above - about people being so busy with their own lives that they really don't have time to continually fixate on someone else's issues - at least, not 100% of the time. Of course, unless they are the mother-in-law. Just kidding. But seriously, if you've put on pounds, work diligently to take them off. Who knows? The next time you meet up with that 'shocked & awed friend' they may experience shock and awe anew over your weight loss accomplishments.
