Weight Gain - How 'It' Happens
by Sky Taylor, Diet Bites
Do you find your scales a bit out of control these days - and in turn, those unwanted pounds are making your life feel out of control? And do you often ponder the mysterious culprit of those extra pounds?
Yeah, yeah, yeah - overeating certainly packs on pounds, but what else? Particularly when you don't appear to be overindulging.
Although overindulgence is the commonly perceived culprit of weight gain, the environment or situation in which overeating occurred has a big influence on weight gain. Let's use Kelly to our right as an example.
Situation #1: Kelly was a slim 24-year old when she married Tim. During the first year of her marriage, she packed on 20 unwanted pounds. Oddly enough, Kelly wasn't even a good cook. In fact, her and Tim dined out more often than not. The desirable atmosphere of the restaurants, the soft music baying in the background and her engaging conversations with Tim served to keep her focus off the amount of food she was consuming - thus the culprit for weight gain.
Situation #2: Kelly became pregnant during her second year of marriage and had hoped that she'd deliver a forty pound baby as her weight scales were rocketing out of control. Even so, the 6 pound baby girl was perfect in every way, although Kelly did have a bit of difficulty during the delivery process, those pesky pounds not helping. Because Kelly had been more absorbed in her anticipation of becoming a new mommy - she had focused more on that aspect of her life than on the food she consumed, thus unwanted pounds continued to pack on.
Situation #3: On her daughter's tenth birthday, Kelly found herself 100 pounds overweight as well as experiencing signals of ill-health. A trip to the doctor revealed that Kelly had developed diabetes. Her doctor instructed her to drop those extra pounds in an effort to get her weight under control, but the more that Kelly tried to resist food, the more tempted she became - a typical reaction. The moment some of us are told that we cannot do or have something, that's the moment that we want it all the more.
In Summary
Because Kelly's story is fictional, we want it to have a very happy ending. Therefore, Kelly lost those unwanted pounds, getting her diabetes under control. Unfortunately, in real life things don't often end so rosey. Therefore, if you find yourself slowly packing on the pounds, particularly when you don't appear to be overeating on a continuous basis - pause to take a good look at the situations that you are in which can trigger overeating. It may be as simple as watching tv while eating - and you become lost in the movie without noticing or even appreciating the foods you are eating. Other high-risk situations for weight gain may include any of the following: holiday events, celebrations - birthday, anniversary, etc., office meetings in which the friendly Donut Boy & Danish Pastry Girl frequently appear, as well as vacations and family outings.
