The Crazy Things That We Do To Foods That Cause Weight Gain
by Sky Taylor, Diet Bites
Foods begin in a rather primitive state: raw. There just aren't many cheese fries growing in gardens. Bummers. In fact, 99.9% of the foods prepared for our daily diet are wholesome, healthy gifts of Mother Nature.
Then the crazies begin......
Take the simple, innocent, healthy potato to the right of the screen. A small potato contains a tiny 120 calories and is packed with potassium benefits, fiber and satiety powers. Eat one of these babies and you won't be hungry for a long spell to come.
But once this beauty arrives home with us, many times we bake it, then peel back the jacket. Once all that white fluffy goodness is revealed, we may decide that it's rather bland looking. We need to dress it up a bit - add a splash of color (butter), perhaps some cheese - which tends to go well with everything but ice cream; let's add a ladle of bacon bits, a bit of chives, a few jalapeno peppers, and then - well, it just needs something more. Something...white to offset all the color. On goes a glob of sour cream. There - now it's absolutely perfect!
Unfortunately, Ms. 123-Calorie Potato has been instantly transformed into Ms. 798-Calorie Potato. She'll never see a size 8-12 again and it's all our fault!
In Summary
Although it might take some time getting adjusted to the wholesome tastes contained in pure foods, the less we jack with them, the less calories are apt to be added.
So the next time you are presented with a lovely potato, rethink your plan of Diet Attack. If you want something sitting on top of your potato, choose low calorie foods - such as steamed broccoli or asparagus. Use the smallest amount of butter. Be stingy with salt. In time, your taste buds will adjust and you may wonder how anyone manages to consider that 798-calorie potato.
