Introducing Juice Into Baby's Diet
by Sky Taylor, Diet Bites
Nine long months of waiting patiently, then junior (or juniorette) finally makes an appearance. It's only natural for a new mommy and daddy to want to share the things that they enjoy with their new addition - things like football, a visit to the zoo and favorite foods.
Of course, football and the like will have to wait awhile for the newborn baby to enjoy - much less be a participant. But what about those favorite foods? Well, that too must wait until baby has the choppers to deal with such.
Okay. But what about beverages? Juice in particular?
Although we may reap great joy in giving baby a bit of tasty goodness, juice may create more woes than delight for both parents and baby. In fact, even some "grown-babies" have difficulty in handling juice. Although juice is a healthy burst of goodness, it can be highly acidic, thus contributing to tummy woes.
But it's not only the high concentration of acid that irritates the digestive track, juice is notorious for creating gassy upset.
Another downside to juice is that it's extreme in calories - and more baby fat is the last thing that your baby needs at this early age.
In conclusion, no matter how anxious you may be in testing out new foods and drinks on baby, always get your doctor's advice before doing such. It's important to note that in some studies, kids that made juice a part of their daily diet were less apt to put on pounds than those that didn't embrace juice - high calories or not!
