The Benefits and Dangers of Support Forums for Weight Loss

Support forums for weight loss can be a tremendous tool for the dieter.  So much support  - coming from individuals who have a common bond.  Everyone there wants to lose weight.

The dieter may find a treasure cove of tasty recipes, good deals on exercise equipment and diet foods, as well as tips that can help them lose weight.

But surfing for weight loss isn't always positive. With all the wacky diets being shared, the information can be down-right lethal.  Here are a few hot spots to steer clear of:

1. Diet information and advice that deters from the Official Food Pyramid.

2. Since forums involve people, expect to encounter individuals who are depressed about their weight, their slow rate of weight loss, the way they look, the way the feel, etc. AND don't let it get YOU down!  Keep in mind that moods are just that - moods.  

 


3. "One food diets".  Example: On Monday, enjoy all the bananas that you want and nothing more.

4. Starvation diets.  Any weight lost generally comes in the form of muscle and water and quickly returns when eating begins.

5. Choose forums that are monitored by an individual qualified in weight loss issues.  This will help ensure that you get solid advice that won't hurt your health.

6. Be careful about asking others for their opinion because there will be those individuals who won't be concerned about putting 'what they consider the truth-of-the-matter' delicately.

Example: Dieter Susie asks the forum members if they think she is fat.  She is 5' 2" and weighs 100 pounds.  Forum Member Nicky tells her that yes, she is a whale.

So people can be hurtful - but they can also be helpful!  And that's what makes the weight loss forums worth investigating!
