How Carbs are Broken Down in the Human Body

How do carbohydrates work inside the body?  

The chart below may provide a clearer understanding of how our digestive system breaks down carbs as they enter the body.

Opting for complex carbs over simple carbs equals a happy diet plan.

Complex carbs include: legumes, lentils, cabbage, carrots, broccoli, corn, lettuce, potatoes, whole grain bread, pasta.  

Simple carbs include: donuts, cookies and cupcakes.   

Carbohydrates & Their Importance in The Daily Diet

Carbohydrates are part of a healthy daily diet. The daily diet should consist of 45 to 65 percent of total calories from carbohydrates.

Choose your carbohydrates wisely and you'll not only benefit your health, but your waistline as well. Some tips for carbohydrates in the daily diet:

- Your best sources for carbohydrates include foods in the basic food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, and milk.

- Avoid carbs with added sugar, which are commonly known as 'Simple Carbs'.

Beware of the following popular additives which add more calories (empty) than nutritional values: brown sugar, invert sugar, corn sweetener, Lactose, corn syrup, Maltose, Dextrose, malt syrup, Fructose, molasses, fruit juice concentrates, raw sugar, Glucose, Sucrose, high-fructose corn syrup, sugar, honey and syrup.

- Embrace carbohydrates rich in fiber content, which are commonly known as 'Complex Carbs'.

Complex carbs offer excellent nutritional values and can assist the digestive track in operating smoothly while keeping the tummy satisfied for longer periods of time.
