Weight Loss - Mind Power conquers weight gain.

When Excitement Overpowers Diet Sanity

Muffy & Hal paid a nonchalant visit to a car lot only to drive away with a 3-digit payment that was closer to 4 than 3. Blame it on excitement - which almost always overpowers sanity, particularly when combined with buying power.

Once that spanking new vehicle lived at their house a few months, they began to regret venturing out into Car Land, particularly since their payment was now over 3-digits after the insurance was tacked on, thanks to Husband Hal's lead foot.

It's so easy to get caught up in the moment and toss our common horse sense right out the window - just like Muffy & Hal. However, at some point in life most of us will ride an exciting wave and wind up finding that our purchase is much too much for our starving budget. Our wants override our needs. Dieting can be much the same experience.

When we set out dieting, we begin with a smiling face as we run down the Old Diet Trail - blazing past our once-favorite goodies. But as time goes by - those chocolate chip cookies, cheese enchiladas and bean dip that we pass-up along the 'weigh' begin to look mighty tasty. We may think, "Was it really smart to go on a diet? Maybe I should have experienced one last Mexican fiesta OR one last Italian bash OR one last drive-by through my favorite fast food drive-in." We discover that we have suddenly reached the edge of Diet Sanity and realize that we can never go back to our former way of life if we are to achieve our weight loss goals.

That Unwanted Diet Baggage

As with a house or a car - or most anything we purchase, comes uninvited baggage - like insurance, repairs, inspections and so forth. When the loan company approves our purchase, those unexpected life-events aren't generally taken into consideration. What if Wife Muffy gets pregnant? What if Husband Hal gets another speeding ticket? What if Little Woody breaks out Neighbor Jim's window again while he's playing baseball in the backyard with his best friend who has strep throat? Those unexpected single-hitters in life can suddenly turn into home run disasters when multiples occur. Such is dieting.

The desire to lose weight fuels Diet Excitement. The realization that losing weight takes time slaps us back to Diet Reality. Other unexpected baggage when dieting may include:

Dealing with bothersome hunger pains, dragon-breath, & feeling cantankerous as foot on a goat-head sticker patch;

Passing up hot buttered popcorn at the movies and the deluxe pizza afterwards;

Holidays prove fiercely challenging as we watch Aunt Lolita load her plate while our plate contains an olive & a sprig of parsley. Please don't pass the cranberry sauce.

Oh those aching body parts. Exercise pays off in more 'weighs' than one.

In Summary:

There is an ancient joke that my father - who was a minister told when I was a child about a church in need of money. The minister was preaching and he said, "We want this church to fly, but before it can fly it's gotta walk."

One of the male church members called out in a loud voice, "Let 'er walk, brother!"

The minister continued, "And after this church walks, it's gotta run!"

In a more excited tone, the male church member yelled out, "Let 'er run, brother!!"

And the minister continued, "And after it runs, this church is gotta fly! And it's gonna take a lot of money for this church to fly."

To which the male church member responded in a low voice, "Let 'er walk, brother, let 'er walk."

Anything worth anything in life is worth working for - whether it's a quest to lose weight or climbing a mountain to reach the top. And when we don't allow our excitement to overpower our sanity, it just makes life easier - particularly where dieting is involved.

Weight Loss Ain't Easy - Weight loss should be simple. Basically, we eat less and lose weight, right? Well, not quite.
