Zetia, a Cholesterol-Lowering Prescription Medication

ZETIA Update:The manufacturers of Zetia - MERCK and Schering-Plough announced that Zetia failed to prohibit the accumulation of harmful plaque within the arteries.

If you are currently taking Zetia - please consult with your physician as soon as possible to discuss alternative treatment.

How Zetia (ezetimibe) Initially Reported to Fight Cholesterol Risks

Available in tablet form. Zetia was initially reported to work in the digestive track, blocking absorption of cholesterol associated with foods thus lowering total cholesterol, including LDL cholesterol - the 'bad' cholesterol that poses significant health risks. A test for liver disease or liver issues may be performed before an individual is prescribed Zetia. (Then again, because Zetia has failed to perform as reported, it's highly unlikely that it will be prescribed.)

Zetia was reported to be helpful for individuals who were unable to get their cholesterol in check through diet and exercise alone.

Who Shouldn't Take Zetia

- individuals allergic to ezetimibe or its inactive ingredients
- pregnant women
- breastfeeding mothers
- women who may become pregnant
-  individuals taking certain medications that may react unfavorably with Zetia
