Your Diet Plate & Palate

Boring Diet - No Way! Diet Bites Tips to Jazz Up Your Diet Plan

Why is it always so much fun to dine away from home - particularly in a nice restaurant environment?

Diet Bites has one answer that we'd like to pick from the pot: Because the plates, bowls & tables are always eye-appealing which in turn, creates an unforgettable dining experience.

In fact, an eye-appealing presentation can make that not-so-hot-tasting soup taste even better than it really is.

Eye-appealing equals appetite-appealing and it's just one method of getting in touch with one's Dining Senses.

Because an eye-appealing meal often stimulates appetite, it can add drama to the generally-un-eye-appealing Diet Plate. And creating an eye-appealing meal is something that (almost) anyone can do. Here's how to jazz-up your diet plate while adding a healthy twist to your diet plan:

Diet A-Typical & boring: A white plate containing a roasted chicken breast, mixed vegetables and a slice of bread.

Reformed - Diet Drama Queen: A black plate containing a roasted chicken breast, mixed vegetables, a slice of bread PLUS a beautiful strawberry fan situated gently on the plate beside the colorful vegetables.

The Pickled Village - 'Anything pickled' can add fun and dimension to the Diet Plate. Green olives, black olives, pickled pearl onions, pickled okra, capers, small sweet pickles, pickled beets and pickled beans are just a few that pop to mind.

The Main Entrees & Veggie Town - How Green is My Diet Garden?

Small greens equal BIG DIET DRAMA for TEENSY calories. Try adding any of the following to your next main entree: frilly parsley, fresh mint - or any freshly picked herbs, celery tips and curled veggies - such as curled cucumber strips OR go orange with carrot curls.

Fruit & Dieting

Fruit Fans - Fruits that fan nicely include: melons, strawberries, kiwi, peaches, pears & apples. Next time your pull that breast of roasted chicken out of the oven and put it on a plate with mixed vegetables and a slice of whole grain bread - try adding a fan of fruit to the plate. Fruit equals drama and drama equals interesting.

Give Us Our Daily Diet Breads While Dieting

Although most of us would agree that the best eye-appeal for bread is yellow butter - butter reeks of calories, and let's face it, it's 100% fat - all but that little dab of yellow food coloring. Rather than grabbing the butter for your bread, keep your diet in check by adding the following:

- A spoon of fruit-filled preserves.

- For garlic bread, spray bread with butter flavored cooking spray and sprinkle with garlic salt. Toast under broiler until golden.

- For cheese toast, spray bread with butter flavored cooking spray and toast until golden; add 1 slice of 60-calorie mozzarella skim-based cheese and return to heat until cheese melts.

- Opt for bread with the toppings baked inside such as oat-topped bread, raisin bread and whole-grain breads.

Desserts & Dieting

Adding the following to desserts adds drama without adding pounds - when kept under control:

- A dollop of light topping to fat-free/sugar-free puddings & gelatins.

- One jarred cherry with a cute stem attached.

- Fruit fans.

- A tiny sprinkling of nuts & seeds which also adds protein & fiber to the dessert (which in some cases, may be the only true nutritional value contained in the dessert)

- A couple of curls of DARK chocolate.

Beverages & Dieting

Kick up your boring beverages with the following Diet Tips:

- Add seeded grapes or pitted cherries to ice cubes, then fill with your favorite low calorie juice. Freeze. Imagine how pretty these colorful cubes will look in your next glass of low calorie juice or sparkling water.

- Tiny umbrellas beat the death out of Boring Diet.

- One jarred cherry with a cute stem attached.

- Add 0-calorie seltzer to your fruit drinks for a fizzy difference. Don't forget the wedges of lime, lemon, orange, grapefruit and kiwi for the glass rim.

- For hot/warm beverages, add a dollop of light whipped topping, a few mini-marshmallows, a sprinkle of ground cinnamon or cocoa powder.

In Summary

Little things add up to big weight loss results when dieting. Adding simple, low calorie extras to entrees, drinks and desserts work towards satisfying both the plate and the palate.
